Laparoscopic Surgery Simulator (Sina Sim Lap)

Sina Sim Lap is a combination of computer hardware, mechanical user interface and software modules which simulate the procedures and environment of Laparoscopic surgery, based on Virtual-Reality environment.

The system's hardware replicates the geometric and spatial aspects of laparoscopic surgery. It provides the user a variety of surgical instruments, electrosurgery pedals, and a specific conditions that simulate the real conditions of laparoscopic surgery.

The system's software, along with the hardware, simulates the laparoscopic surgery environment from an engineering standpoint. It responds according to the user's interaction with the hardware, surgical instruments, and electrosurgery pedals. Additionally, it simulates the behavior of the organ being operated on.

Basic Skills

Sina Sim software includes 24 exercises to teach basic skills. Some of the most important of these skills are:

Camera navigation

The ability to manipulate the laparoscope to view the surgical field and identify key anatomical structures. This skill is essential for laparoscopic surgery, as the surgeon relies on the camera view to perform the procedure.

Handle coordination

The ability to manipulate laparoscopic instruments with precision and accuracy. This skill includes path navigation, sorting objects, peg placement, object manipulation, needle handling, and cholecystectomy puzzle.

Cutting

The ability to use laparoscopic scissors or other instruments to dissect tissue, remove tissue, or cut veins or other blood vessels. This skill includes pattern cutting and vein cutting.

Clipping

The ability to use a laparoscopic clip applier to close off blood vessels or other structures. This skill includes clip applying at level 1 and level 2.

Electro surgery

The use of specialized instruments to burn or cauterize tissue, which can help to control bleeding and prevent the spread of infection.

Anatomy

Anatomical skills with camera navigation in laparoscopic simulation training refers to the ability to navigate the laparoscope, which is a camera used in laparoscopic surgery, through the anatomical structures of the abdominal cavity during a simulated surgical procedure. This skill involves a thorough understanding of the anatomy of the abdomen and pelvis, as well as the ability to navigate the laparoscope with precision and accuracy.

By mastering anatomical skills with camera navigation in laparoscopic simulation training, surgeons and other medical professionals can enhance their ability to perform minimally invasive surgical procedures, which can lead to better patient outcomes, less pain, and faster recovery time. Anatomy trainings are divided in anatomy navigation and anatomy test. Trainees can learn the anatomy in anatomy navigation trainings and their understanding is challenged and tested in anatomy test trainings.

Sina Sim software includes 6 exercises to teach anatomy skills.

Using this system, surgical residents can be taught laparoscopic surgery techniques before operating on human patients. This approach is driven by ethical considerations for protecting animal rights during animal surgeries. Additionally, the system allows users to log in with their own accounts and participate in practice sessions. It can generate performance and progress reports, which can be sent to the supervising professor during the internship.
